Comic Book Villains Wish List: Gotham – Ventriloquist

Moving on until Christmas Day I’ve done all of the CW series so it’s time to switch over to Fox and share my wicked wishlist for Gotham. The series has attracted many well-known villains including Penguin, Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman, Ra’s al Ghul, Joker, and more. And there is now a doubt that they will get to the big few that they have not yet introduced. But the villain I would like to see them do is the ventriloquist.

The character of Arnold Wesker and his puppet Scarface first appeared in Detective Comics # 583 (1988) from creators Alain grant, Jean Wagner and Norm Breyfogle. And unlike most Batman Thieves, Wesker is gentle and reluctant while his model calls the shots. As a child, his parents were killed by a truck full of window mannequins. He was traumatized by the event and eventually went into psychotic depression which led him to kill a man in a bar fight. He was sent to Blackgate Prison where he was a cellmate with a prisoner named Donnegan who was interested in ventriloquism and a model named Woody. Wesker became fascinated with the model, eventually hearing her speak to him even when Donnegan was not there. Woody told him about an escape tunnel Donnegan had been digging for years. Donnegan saw Wesker touch his dummy and tried to kill him, with Woody having a scar on his face in the fight. Wesker won, killed Donnegan, took the puppet, and escaped. The puppet renamed himself Scarface and asked Wesker to kill two guards as he got out of prison.

The ventriloquist has no power. He is gifted at ventriloquism and clearly suffers from multiple personality disorder. Scarface’s character is a criminal mastermind and strategist, while Wesker is good at running a business. He’s wearing a Tommy Gun that looks like the model pulling him.

Gotham has been great embracing the silliness of the characters and turning them into strengths. Showing the true psychological horrors that these characters could be. If they took the time to slowly introduce the character like they did with Edward Nygma and Oswald Cobblepot, he could become a fan favorite character as well. And watching him grow up while all the other villains are fighting would be even sweeter when he finally makes his debut.
