Caped Crusader Animated Series Adds Ed Brubaker As Lead Writer

Batman: Crusader in a Cloak already has an impressive number of creatives working behind the scenes, with Bruce Timm, JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves all involved in bringing the new animated series to life. According to Hollywood journalist, the upcoming animated series from HBO Max and Cartoon Network has officially landed another big hitter. Comic book writer Ed Brubaker has reportedly joined the team at Caped Crusader and will serve as chief writer and executive producer of the ten-episode first season. Brubaker, who previously worked in the comedy side of Gotham with titles such as Batman, Catwoman, and Gotham Central, would run the show’s writers’ room alongside Timm. On the TV side of things, Brubaker was once on the HBO writing team. Westworld, and produced Amazon Too old to die young.

“Here’s something that not many people know, but the original Batman: The Animated Series was one of the things that made me want to write superhero comics in general, and Batman in particular, ”Brubaker explained in a statement. “If not for what Bruce Timm and all the talented writers and artists did with this show, things like my redesign of cat woman with Darwyn Cooke (who worked on BTAS) and Gotham Central with Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, would never have happened. So when Bruce Timm offered me the chance to come and work on this new reimagining of Batman with him, James Tucker, JJ Abrams, and Matt Reeves, I jumped on it.

Using the latest animation techniques and technologies available, Batman: Crusader in a Cloak will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences, all set in a visually striking world. Casting details are currently unknown.

“We are more than excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell some compelling new stories in Gotham City,” Timm, Abrams and Reeves said in a statement. “The series will be exciting, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s dark roots, while delving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We look forward to sharing this new world.

Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans, ”added Sam Register. “With this in mind, we are bringing together three master storytellers in JJ, Matt and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”

This will mark Timm’s long-awaited return to animating Batman on television, having spearheaded the Emmy winner. Batman: The Animated Series. For Reeves and Abrams, collaboration is important on many levels – on the one hand, the couple have been friends and collaborators since the age of 13, working on projects such as Congratulated and Cloverfield. On another level, the two recently signed landmark deals with WarnerMedia – Abrams for a Global Deal and Reeves for a Global TV Deal.
